Palm Print Shadow Box Art

In the past I’ve had mixed feelings about shadow boxes, they’re used to display memorabilia, sports jerseys or shell collections, that sort of thing. I’ve come around on this style of frame for wall displays now that I see them in a new light. If the subject matter of the shadow box is simple, I’m in.

I wanted to change up the mantel scene with a creative new art project. I decided on palm leaf shadow box art after spying this black and linen version at Pottery Barn. I gathered some faux palm leaves and an artificial monstera leaf, painted them shiny black, mounted them on linen and displayed them in shadow box format to create high contrast dimensional art.


I found a smaller shadow box at Michaels (art on the right) but couldn’t find an affordable large size shadow box for the palm leaf trio, so I made a shadow box using an IKEA RIBBA frame and trim from Lowe’s. Details on how below.

There are several shadow box art displays you can buy, many of them at a high price. My inspiration was the black palm leaf from Pottery Barn, but it costs $399.

Those other versions are expensive too, so I decided to recreate the look (and add my own spin) for a lot less. My cost was $50 for each piece.


Supplies to recreate: faux palm stems; spray paint; shadow box or IKEA RIBBA frame + ¾” trim from home improvement store; linen fabric; spray adhesive; masking tape; hot glue + hot glue gun; garden shears to trim faux stems.

I found some larger scale artificial palm stems. I had the palm leaf trio already, I estimate the same size similar to these costs between $5-8. The monstera leaf was $13 with a coupon from Michaels. I spray painted all of them gloss black and let them dry overnight.

The shadow boxes are backed in linen fabric (find it at any fabric store) and secured with spray adhesive. Spray the adhesive to the thick board backing that comes with the shadow box or frame and smooth the fabric so it’s flat. Secure the edges of the linen to the back of the board with masking tape.

Arrange the painted stems on the linen board at the angle you prefer then glue the painted stems to the board.

I bought at 16×20 shadow box at Michaels for the monstera leaf so I just reassembled it. For the larger piece, I made the frame with an IKEA picture frame.


The RIBBA frame has a wide edge so if you add lattice trim to the interior you can create a shadow box with either ¾” or 1” with wood strips from a home improvement store. I bought 8 ft. of both the 1” lattice and the ¾” pine bead because I wasn’t sure which would work better. Turns out, both work.


Using the 1” lattice will give you more space for your dimensional artwork inside the frame but you’ll need more masking tape on the back to secure the linen covered back to the frame.


I chose the ¾” pine bead so I could set the linen covered back inside the frame. I painted it black to match the interior of the frame and glued it to the inside of the RIBBA frame.

The trim allows you to set the linen backed board on top of it to create a shadow box for dimensional art. The RIBBA frame size I used was 19×27”, but you could make a shadow box with any size RIBBA frame.

Once I set the linen backed board inside, I secured the back with masking tape.


That’s the process to create a shadow box with an IKEA frame. Paired with the shadow box I bought at Michaels, the two make an interesting dimensional art display!

Lighting Needs for Indoor Plants

1) Artificial lighting specifically made for plants emit the right spectrum of light for them to grow optimally

There are three factors for lighting to keep in mind when it comes to plant growth:

– Amount of light: the number of daylight hours on plants

– Light intensity: levels of light ranging from full sun to full shade

– Spectrum: cool and warm colors  

If you do not have enough lights in your room for your indoor plants, artificial plant lighting is the solution to consider. Artificial plant lighting specifically made for plants emits the proper spectrum that plants need to grow optimally. Artificial lights help plants get access to the sun’s wavelength spectrums. Plants need warm orange and red hues for flowering and cool violet and blue hues for foliage. You can use a nice greenhouse grow light to ensure that your indoor plants get the right spectrum of light to grow optimally.

2) How do you know whether your indoor plants are getting too much or too little light?

There are a few things to look for to understand if your indoor plants are not getting sufficient light:

– New leaves are smaller compared to existing ones.

– Growth is spindly, with there being long spaces between successive leaves

– Slow growth or no growth

– Lower leaves become yellow and eventually fall off

– New shoots of your plants grow only toward the light

– Flowering plants either bloom poorly or don’t bloom at all

Here is what to look for to understand if your plants are getting too much light:

– Leaves fall off after becoming dry

– Plants wilt around midday

– Leaves of plants look washed out or faded

– Brown scorched patches are formed on leaves

3) How long should you keep lights on for your indoor plants?

The amount of light your indoor plants need depends upon the plant type. For example, flowering plants should receive at least 12 to 16 hours of daily light. However, foliage plants should receive around 14  to 16 hours of daily light. At the same time, ensure that your plants get at least 6 to 8 hours of total darkness in a day, as darkness is essential for plant growth. You should try and ensure that your lights are on at approximately the same time each day. It is a good idea to install an automatic timer for your lighting system. Doing so will allow you to set the time so that your lights turn on and switch off at the same time daily. You can use certain products to measure the amount of light your plant is getting and understand how much light your indoor plants actually need.

4) How far should you place your plants from the lights?

The majority of indoor plants should have the light source 6 to 12 inches from the plant tips. Keep in mind that light intensity drops as the distance from the lights increases. If you are using fluorescent tubes, bear in mind that the brightest spot is directly under the center of a fluorescent tube since they emit more light in the center than at the ends. If necessary, you can raise the plants if you cannot lower your light fixture to ensure that the plants are at an optimum distance from the lights.

Note: This post was born from an updated Before & After page that we heard people were having trouble finding (since it wasn’t at the top of our blog feed). So here it is, forever immortalized as a chronological post. And now, since we’ll continue to update our Before & After page over time, we have this post frozen in time, which is nice to look back on. Wish we had done it around 6 months in and at the year mark too.

We downsized to this 1,400 square foot house in Northwest Florida on May of 2020 after a fast, furious, and long-distance three-month renovation. Let’s face it: When your family has kids in it, all your pre-kid home design dreams might have to go out the window for the time being. A towering bookcase? Not a good idea. That sweet-smelling candle you used to leave on the coffee table? Either put it up high or give it to a friend. A display of delicate vases? Vases? Really?

A bright white couch? … You can’t be serious. But, hey — it’s not all bad. You can still have a home that feels cozy, warm, and well-appointed. It’s just going to take a little more thought. Most notably, you may need to invest in some new furniture pieces to make your home more functional and efficient. Don’t worry, though, we’ve got some tips for keeping things as stylish and sophisticated as possible.

Without further ado, here are 5 indoor furniture pieces you’ll want to invest in when you have kids in the house.

1. An Entryway Coat and Hat Rack

Without a doubt, the entryway of any home is probably the most disordered. Okay, except for the kids’ rooms … and maybe the kitchen. But seriously, entryways can get messy! To help keep your family on track with their hats, coats, scarves, backpacks, purses, and more, invest in an entryway coat and hat rack. While an entryway closet can certainly help organize your things too, closets tend to be like black holes where family members just throw things. Because an entryway organizer is out in the open, it’s not only easier to see what’s there, but you’re more likely to keep it well-stocked and neat as well.

2. Easy-to-wash Rugs.

Even darkly-colored rugs and those with busy designs that tend to hide stains best should be washable if you have kids. For a long time, this was virtually impossible — especially for larger rugs. While you could usually find small throw rugs that could be tossed into a larger-sized washing machine (or taken to the laundromat for their industrial-sized machines), it wasn’t easy to find a large washable rug. Now, new companies are coming out with 5 x 7 and even 6 x 9 rugs that can be wadded up and put into your own washing machine. These are essential for homes with kids.

3. A Washable Couch (yes, you read that right).

When it comes to your home, high-quality indoor furniture is always best. And when it comes to kids, this means washable. Of course, most furniture is washable at least to some extent. You can usually spot clean a couch or chair no matter the fabric. Still, success is not always guaranteed, and as we all know, kids don’t usually spill water. They spill grape juice. For this reason, you should be on the lookout for one of the new “washable couches” that are now available. No, you can’t put the entire couch in the washer (we wish). But you can remove the covers on the cushions, armrests, couch back, etc. and toss those in the wash. Even if these types of couches tend to come with a slightly higher price tag, we think the washability is still well worth the cost.

4. Low Bookcases.

When kids are really small, they not only love books, but they love to climb on things. This makes tall bookcases a no-no for kid-friendly areas. While taller shelves can certainly be attached to the wall with anti-tip kits, they are still hazards because the objects on them could fall and hit kids on the head. Plus, even if a bookcase is anchored to the wall, you don’t want your children to be able to climb up on them. For this reason, it’s better to always invest in short bookcases — as well as other low-to-the-ground furniture — wherever your kids will be playing and hanging out.

5. A family Storage Unit with one Cubby for each Family Member

Who was it that said, “80% of parenting is picking up toys”? No one? Hm … well, even so. That’s about the gist of it. If you haven’t already learned this lesson, then learn it now while you still have time, get online and order an organization unit with bins for all of your family members. You’ll want one cubby or bin for each kid and one for you and one for your partner as well. With a storage unit like this, when you clean up at the end of each day (and 10,000 times throughout the day), you’ll have a handy little place to put everyone’s things.

Any family with kids knows that all the stepped-on Legos, crayon-covered walls, and stained throw pillows are totally worth it. At the same time, you’re not crazy if you’d like to keep at least a little sanity, cleanliness, and style about you.
